Scope and Contents This well illustrated book provides the definitive review of Hoffmeister's works and his life.According to John Vloemans (internet)" Adolf Hoffmeister was undoubtedly one of the most pittoresque figures of the intellectual and artistic scene in Prague during the interbellum. His was a restless and unconventional spirit, that could not be classified. He was born on August 15, 1902 in Prague into a well-to-do family. Adolf Hoffmeister was described as an elegant globetrotter and art connoisseur, a gourmand, who had a special bond with the magic power of his hometown Prague. He was at once a painter, caricaturist, illustrator, stage decorator, author, playwright, translator, journalist, radio reporter, professor of art, art critic, politician, diplomat, cultural ambassador and world traveller. No wonder he cannot be classified in any of the artistic schools of his country. What he carries his whole life, was his left-intellectual faith, as so many of his generation did. Philip Meggs has written the most throughly illustrated, definitive history of graphic communications. In the epilogue, Meggs notes the following: "At the time of this writing human affairs are undergoing a new revolution comparable to the industrial revolution that launched the machine age. Electronic circuitry, microprocessors, and computer-generated imagery threaten to radically alter our culture's images, communications processes, and the very nature of the work itself. Graphic design, like many other sources of human activity, is undergoing profound changes." -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

Scope and Contents

This second edition attempts to provide a conceptual and pictorial overview of significant graphic-design accomplishments. The book is organized into five general chronological sections: The Prologue to Graphic Design; A Graphic Renaissance; The Industrial Revolution; The Modernist Era; The Information Age. Each section is then divided thematically into chapters. This edition has expanded content, revised format and typography, timelines for each section and an expanded bibliography. In keeping with the Epilogue in the first edition, Meggs designed the dust jacket of this second edition using computer generated graphics. Although the number of pages in the second edition is slightly smaller than the first edition, this is because the font size is smaller; actually, the text has been expanded to cover recent contemporary trends in graphic design. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

Scope and Contents

This third edition provides hundreds of new full-color illustrations and new material in areas such as alphabets, Japanese and Dutch graphics, and the computer revolution. The book is organized into five sections: The Prologue to Graphic Design; A Graphic Renaissance; The Industrial Revolution; The Modernist Era; The Age of Information. Each section is then divided thematically into chapters. This edition has expanded content, revised format and typography, timelines for each section and an expanded bibliography. Scope and Contents

This book reprints, in dazzling, different, typographical layouts, film scripts and criticisms by avant garde writers and poets of the 20th century. The book, which is designed with several different colored papers and typefaces, received a prize for Arts and Essays from the National Center of Cinematography in France. Typewriter poetry is present on the film scenario of Fortunato Depero and sound poetry in the script by Francois Dufrene. Picture poems are depicted in the Fluxus film scripts by Robert Filliou and George Brecht. Villegle's script includes his typical ideograms. Lawrence Weiner's script is uncharacteristically dense in content and more visual/verbal than his usual works. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

Scope and Contents

Bohn analyzes Apollinaire's exhibition catalog dealing with Leopold Survage and Irene Lagut using calligrams of prose as the vehicle for his critique. Bohn is especially intrigued with the rare handcolored edition of the catalog that he mentions is owned by the Columbia University rare book collection; it was the only copy he was able to find. Just after publication of his book, Bohn visited the Sackner Archive and learned of its handcolored edition - too late to include in the book. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
